Heels are unappetizing

Dear all five readers of this blog,

We don't like the heels of the loaf of bread, and I suggested to the kids that maybe if they were called something other than "heels", we might be more inclined to eat them.  So we started brainstorming new names...
starts (too boring)
butts (too gross)
golden squares of deliciousness (too dramatic)
fish food
crumbs

What ideas do you have?

Love,
Janel

Your story made me think of when I was helping at a soup kitchen on a Saturday morning two summers ago in Chicago. ( I love to help at soup kitchens, but I usually have too many children in tow to help...this time I was by myself) After the soup kitchen they made the 1000 (yes that number is correct)sandwhiches they hand out during the week. They did NOT use any of the heels. You can imagine with 300 loaves of bread there were many heels. I told them the heels would feed my children for many days....they asked me to not take them. Even the homeless deserve to not eat heels. LOL
In our house we turn the heel inside out for the sandwhich so no one notices too much they got it.
Blessings!

We used to butter the end pieces and roll our corn on the cob on it. You can butter corn really well and the end pieces don't get soggy and fall apart very quickly. I guess you could call them corn mitts. I don't know if that makes them more appetizing though.

We also call them heels, but sometimes we call them "ends" - which is amusing considering you called them "starts".

Maybe we should just call the slices "betweens". :)

My grandfather - who went thru the depression - used the "ends" and this was a treat. He put a thick layer of lard (or butter if you were lucky) and then covered the lard with a load of white sugar (also a treat at that time). It now makes my teeth hurt just to think about it.

This was fun!

I'm not creative enough to think of new names, but why don't you save them and re-purpose later? If the bread is still fresh - make french toast sticks. Kids will eat anything if it's covered in sticky syrup! :)
If the bread isn't so fresh, cut them up and make croutons...or pulse them in the food processor for breadcrumbs.
Hope that helps!

Let us all know what you decide to call those heels or golden squares of deliciousness (I like drama!).

Thanks for the comments, everyone! I think we'll continue to call them heels and use them for fish bait.

... and they're also great for feeding the ducks at the Pekin lagoon. Just don't fall in!
